About the role

Reporting directly to the Senior Advisor – EMS and Chemistry, the Officer – EMS & Chemistry plays a key role in supporting the daily administrative operations of the Environmental Monitoring & Reporting. This position is vital for ensuring accurate documentation, effective administration of construction activities, supporting project management processes and the smooth flow of communication between stakeholders, all while supporting NPL’s Environment activities.

In This Role, You Will

Always Comply with NPL Safety and Environment Policies
Ensure chemistry field monitoring, laboratory analyses and reporting are completed in accordance with NPL policies, Management Plans, procedures and schedules
Ensure all incidents are reported and investigated according to Company policy and statutory requirements and all recommended corrective actions are completed on time
Promote environmentally sound work practices among peers and contractors and ensure all environmental requirements are complied with and maintained
Be safety conscious and observe NPL Health and Safety Policy
Perform other tasks as requested by supervisor or dept manager

About You

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:

Tertiary (Degree or Diploma) educational qualification in chemistry
1 or more years of laboratory experience
Hands on experience in chemistry field sampling and laboratory analyses/preparations
Be willing to work and overnight in remote locations when required
Working knowledge of MS Office applications (MS Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint)
Be a team player, willingness to learn new skills and take initiative in the role
Be keen to work near and around water.
Must have a valid PNG Driver’s License
Position is categorized as local staff

Mobilization Requirement

This is a PNG National Local Staff position, a site-based role on a Walk in Walk out arrangement with rotation of 10 days on and 4 days off. Must successfully pass a pre-employment medical including drug and alcohol screening. (This will be arranged only for successful candidates who progress after the interview stage) and have an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Must be a Local Porgeran (Cat 1A – SML, Cat 1B –LMP or Cat 2 – Other Porgera) candidate and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.

What You Will Do

Analytical Chemist
- Work with other analytical chemists to oversee routine laboratory analyses (ICP-OES, TC/TN, Timberline, TOC, pH, density, viscosity, OM) and ensure the lab is up to date with current methods.
- Develop and/or optimize in-house analytical methods based on the company’s needs.
- Maintain equipment in proper working order, includes setting up service agreements with 3rd parties, troubleshooting and minor repairs.
- Perform advanced chemical analysis (HPLC, HRMS, TGA, etc…).
- Responsible for hazardous waste collection, storage and disposal.
- Work with other analytical chemists to organize workflow for day to day operations.
- Maintain a clean work area including proper cleaning of glassware and laboratory equipment.
Safety, Behavioral Standards
- Maintain exemplary laboratories in terms of safety and compliance and follow all personal protective equipment requirements.
- Act as a leader and example for the company’s Behavioral Standards, which focus on Safety, Integrity, Inclusion, Performance, Community, and Innovation.

What You Will Bring

Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, Masters or Ph.D. preferred.
5+ years of experience working in a laboratory.
Specialized experience in analytical chemistry with an emphasis in agriculture.
Strong attention to detail and very organized.
Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range $68,400 - $127,100/annually. This range is estimated for  Analytical Chemist

Responsibilities

Self-motivated to identify and carry out tasks needed supporting operations in the Testing Operations laboratories.
Identify workflow shortcomings and correct to streamline processes.
Become proficient in all laboratory equipment operation and develop needed troubleshooting skillset to lead problem solving efforts when needed.
Have positive interaction in lab groups that encourage knowledge transfer to build value in laboratory teams with focus on unit problems and resolutions.
Provide direction for laboratory teams to improve throughput and production quality.
Become key point person between laboratory operations and supervisor providing operational updates on issues impacting testing schedules.
Develop new methods to improve equipment test protocols, document through the MOC system and update or generate new SOP in compliance with ISO certification.
Develop working role in MCAT unit operations, generate SOP, MOC, and training documents to ensure backup technician can successfully run the unit.
Maintain, improve, and develop SOPs for work conducted in the TO labs.
Develop troubleshooting guidelines for all specialized equipment to be used for training and operational problem solving.
Work with supervisor on improvement projects, implement, document, and provide valued feedback.
Evaluate lab equipment inventories to provide operational sustainability for long term lab support.
Identify any deterrent from Ketjen Health, Environmental, and Safety policies in place and correct for compliance.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related disciplines from an accredited university
3+ years of relevant experience
Exemplary safety record and proven commitment to safety in the workplace
Strong teamwork and leadership skills
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Adept at technical troubleshooting, problem solving and solid mechanical aptitude
Excellent time management ability by understanding priorities, anticipating problems, and scheduling tasks effectively

Preferred Requirements

Previous experience in a chemistry laboratory
