Job Description:

Summary:

The person in this position will work with clients and project teams to support characterization of environmental resources, impact assessments, and project permitting and compliance. Specifically, this role involves completing wetland delineations and in-field streams evaluations, protected species assessments, and other ecological field investigations to support the development of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) permit applications typically associated with Part 303 (Wetlands Protection) and Part 301 (Inland Lakes & Streams) of the Michigan Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act 1994 PA 451.

Fieldwork will include wetland delineations, botanical inventories, functional assessments, protected species habitat reviews, stream evaluations, ecological restoration monitoring, and both office and on-site meetings with clients and regulatory agency officials. The work may involve occasional short-term, out-of-town assignments in the field or another Barr office. Office-based work may involve performing desktop reviews such as topography, soils, streams, land use/cover, National Wetland Inventory, protected species databases, completing assessments to determine environmental impacts, preparing applications and reports required for implementation of projects and mitigation of impacts, preparing restoration planning documents, and working with clients and regulatory agencies to resolve ecological and regulatory issues for projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/studies/policy, ecology, natural resources management, biology, botany, or a related natural resources field
5 years of relevant experience with regulatory interpretation, and permitting processes primarily involving the lakes, streams, and wetlands regulatory programs through State of Michigan and federal government
Experience conducting independent wetland delineations, wetland functional assessments, and wetland impact assessments in Michigan
Familiarity with GPS units and other field data collection applications
Applied knowledge of endangered species programs
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, agency regulators, and clients
A flexible working style and the ability to work with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
Exceptional organizational skills
Experience with task management
Ability to work in a fast-paced, client-driven environment and to manage commitments across many different clients and projects

Compensation:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $75,000—85,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

Description

Under limited supervision plans, organizes, manages and evaluates designated engineering projects and programs, ensuring the successful conclusion of all phases within an appropriate time and at appropriate cost.

Supervises, enhances and monitors designated engineering practices for the site
Reports environmental compliance issues and makes recommendations to appropriate site management for correction
Supervises or reviews, investigates and develops appropriate recommendations regarding planned engineering projects. Supervises or may serve as Project Manager or technical expert, on large/complex site construction, expansion or modification engineering projects
Provides guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations
Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment
Contributes to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated engineering areas

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

In this role, you will:

Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies
Update and manage environmental data and reporting in our Environmental Data Management System (EMS)
Assist with on-site research and development activities as well as monitoring, sampling, inspecting, and reporting for environmental reclamation and geotechnical compliance

Requirements:

This is a temporary, full-time, hourly paid position open to current students who will be returning to their studies once this work term is complete. This position is not available for remote work.
Work will be both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Outside the office, standard work wear will consist of hard hats, safety boots, safety glasses and ear plugs, with other items as needed; these items will be provided

What you will do:

Support air, water, and waste compliance processes including inspections and identification of environmental hazards
Record keeping and filing organization to support compliance documentation in alignment with internal policies
Contribute to data collection, analysis, and validation for internal and external reporting processes
Assist in development of standard operating procedures to support the plant environmental management processes
Coordinate an effort to automate environmental field data collection

What you will bring:

Must be currently enrolled and have completed at least 1 year of an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science/Engineering or equivalent related program at an accredited post-secondary institution AND returning to full-time studies after the work term.
Demonstrate positive safety behavior and leadership

Compensation & Benefits:

Hourly Rate: $23.62-27.09 USD per hour. This range is estimated for this position located in Geismar, LA. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

Environmental Monitor

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Monitor will play a key supportive role in environmental monitoring programs, working closely with the Environmental Technician to assist with sample collection and fieldwork. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, is comfortable in remote locations, and is experienced in operating off-road equipment. Travel to the site, along with room and board, will be provided by the company. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about the outdoors and eager to contribute to environmental compliance in a remote, field-based position.

Primary Responsibilities

Assist the Environmental Technician with collecting air, water, soil, and other environmental samples
Help ensure samples are properly packaged and prepared for shipment to external laboratories
Operate and maintain field equipment (if qualified) such as ATVs, snowmobiles, and boats
Perform basic maintenance on sampling pumps, generators, and other field equipment
Support data collection activities, including the use of GPS and data loggers
Adhere to safety and quality control protocols during all fieldwork
Assist with environmental inspections and investigations as needed
Ensure compliance with company policies and Federal, Provincial, and Indigenous Nation agreements

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, And Experience

Grade 12 diploma required
Experience working in remote or outdoor environments
Comfortable working in all weather conditions and remote outdoor environments
Physically fit and able to handle the demands of fieldwork, including hiking and carrying equipment
Ability to operate off-road vehicles and outdoor equipment (ATVs, snowmobiles, boats)
Comfortable working around helicopters for fieldwork
Strong focus on health and safety practices
Driver’s license preferred
Basic knowledge of environmental sampling processes (education in environmental studies is an asset but not required)
Willingness to work in remote locations and challenging outdoor conditions
Strong team player with good communication skills
